The Yampa Valley Crane Festival in northwestern Colorado celebrates the fall migration of greater sandhill cranes on their way to their wintering grounds.  Sponsored by Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition, the festival drew me to the harvested wheat fields near Hayden to find these handsome birds.

The landscape is quite lovely and the above image reminds me of the Palouse wheat farms of eastern Washington.

The cranes tended to stay at a distance that didn’t work well for closeup photographs, so I will treat you to a series of sunset-crane-cloud images as they flew to a roost for the night.

Beautiful shots! Cool to see so many cranes together. I usually only see 2 or 3 at a time.

If you could go to the Platte River in Nebraska in March you’d see thousands of sandhill cranes! I hope to do that some day.
