You never know what you’re gonna see when you get out of the car to stretch your legs. I was munching on an oatmeal-chocolate chip cookie when this little guy motored by at Queen Wilhemena State Park in Arkansas.

Set down cookie. Grab camera. Make ooh and aah noises. Take pictures.

At Kerr Arboretum the strange-looking Giant Walking Stick insects were in the throes of passion. For some reason, they really liked this little tree with the big heart-shaped flowers. There were several dozen of these pairs, and the largest was about 8 inches long including the antennae!

The males are smaller. These guys are harmless to us and just eat leaves.

However, when you suddenly discover one crawling on your leg, an involuntary scream is in order!

This guy was huge, too.

Lake Wister State Park had lovely scenery and a few cool flowers and butterflies.

These next flowers might be a type of phacelia, but I can’t figure which species. Nor can I find anything like it in any of my wildflower books.

The yellow-rumped warblers have migrated south. They are affectionately known as “butterbutts.”

A handful of white pelicans cruised Lake Wister, but never got close enough for portraits.

Even shades of brown and gray can make for a nice photo.

However, red is always nice.

And so is gold.

Enjoy your autumn, wherever you are!
