A Pretty Cool Day

Rainbow and blue oak, Fort Hunter Liggett, California

I missed the bus yesterday morning. Actually there was a new driver and he wasn’t at my stop at the right time. So I drove 50 miles to work.

I’m glad I did because as soon as I got to Fort Hunter Liggett, California, the rainbows happened.

Yeah, they really were this intense.

Tom turkeys displaying

The light was so amazing I took a few extra minutes to swing by the San Antonio de Padua Mission a mile outside the post gate. Birds were everywhere but I didn’t have but a minute. These tom turkeys were in full display right in front of the mission.

Elk grazing

Lately there has been a large herd of tule elk grazing in a certain area right off the Jolon Road.

Bull elk and harem

When I left work late in the day I saw this bull elk with some of his harem.

I was surprised the bulls keep their antlers this long. I suppose they will be shedding them soon to grow a yet bigger pair.

As the sun was setting, two coyotes were in full view at the mission. One of them was fairly cooperative.

I’ve never been on post early in the morning or late at night when Reville and Retreat are played, but I understand the coyote choir joins in.

California quail

California quail are very common in the area, and these two males weren’t too anxious to pose.

White-tailed kite and meadowlark

The white-tailed kite stands out with its snow-white plumage, but the meadowlark to the left is more camouflaged.

The sunset tinted the clouds to the east of the Salinas valley, giving this pine tree a nice backdrop. So that was my personal time to and from work. I also got in some photos of the National Guard doing some aerial gunnery in Black Hawk choppers on duty time.

All in all, it was a pretty cool day!
