Male bufflehead in flight

The Morro Coast Bird Festival was four days of amazing birding in my own “backyard.” Of course, most of the birds we saw were water birds.

Horned grebe

The horned grebe’s eyes are so red they show up in the water’s reflections!

Western grebe

The pie-billed grebe played with a slender pipefish until it figured a way to swallow it.

The surf scoters were seen from the San Simeon Pier.

The surfbird was a life lister for me!

Stay tuned for part 4!

Fantastic photos. Love the face-on capture of the horned grebe, gave me a smile; the pied-bill grebe with the pipefish is exquisite, as is the bufflehead in flight. All the times I have birded on the California coast, I never heard of a surfbird. (I’m weak on shorebirds, darnit.) Am really enjoying this series, Cindy, thank you.

Hi Cindy you have a typo – you called the grebe a “Hooded” grebe – is that the eared grebe? Or horned grebe I always have a difficult time telling them apart

Ha ha Patty – it’s not a typo. It’s a brain fart. Thanks for the correction!
