Water Abstracts

I visited Atlanta’s High Museum of Art this weekend to see the Picasso to Warhol exhibit, and though I didn’t “get” many of these works, I was inspired.  How does one know that squiggles and blots of paint make one a “great master” like the 14 artists in this exhibit?  Is it the ability to express one’s vision verbally, defending it as one defends a doctoral dissertion?  Is it the purposeful breaking away from tradition?  Is it the ability, as my son says, to get others to see an ordinary object in a new light, as Marcel Duchamp did with a snow shovel?
