San Simeon with Hearst Castle in background

The California Coast from Montana de Oro State Park to San Simeon is my favorite, and I’m lucky enough to live close by.

Hearst Castle

The tour of the Hearst Castle is a must-do for visitors.

Zebras, Hearst Castle

If you’re lucky you can see the zebra herd in the “front lawn” alongside the Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1).

Enjoy the ride!

Piedras Blancas Lighthouse – look close to see the light

From the lighthouse website: “An earthquake on the last day of 1948 resulted in the upper part of the lighthouse being declared structurally unsound. In 1949, the upper three levels were removed, reducing the height of the tower to about 70 feet. The Fresnel lens was loaned to the Cambria Lions Club under agreement with the USCG. It is on display next to the Veterans Memorial Building on Main Street in Cambria.”

White-tailed kite

Although I went to the Parks Reserve Forces Training Area on business, I arranged to tour with the installation wildlife biologist to see the wildlife, particularly baby burrowing owls, very early in the morning.

We had no luck seeing the owlets, but we did get some great views of another target bird of mine – the white-tailed kite. This one has a rodent in its claws. Read the rest of this entry »
